What happened to Udyog Aadhaar and SSI registration?

Udyog Aadhaar was the MSME registration system that ran from 2015 to 2020. A business filed a Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum and received a 12-digit Udyog Aadhaar Number (UAM). It replaced the even older SSI registration, which issued Small Scale Industry certificates and Provisional Registration Certificates. Both systems are now closed. On 1 July 2020 the Ministry of MSME introduced Udyam Registration in their place, and existing Udyog Aadhaar registrations ceased to be valid — holders had to re-register on the Udyam portal. If your business is still relying on a UAM number, it is not a live MSME registration.

Registration is free on the government portal, the certificate never expires, and the details are validated automatically against your PAN, income tax and GST records rather than being self-declared. You receive a permanent 19-digit Udyam Registration Number. Everything people wanted Udyog Aadhaar for — collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, priority-sector lending, subsidies on ISO certification and trademark filings, preference in government tenders on GeM, and the statutory right to interest on payments delayed beyond 45 days — is now gated behind an active Udyam registration and nothing else.

No. Udyog Aadhaar was discontinued on 1 July 2020 and replaced by Udyam Registration. You cannot obtain a new Udyog Aadhaar number today, and no one who offers to sell you one is being straight with you. What you can get — and what we file for you — is Udyam registration, which is the same MSME recognition under its current name.

No. Existing Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) registrations ceased to be valid and holders were required to re-register on the Udyam portal. If you are still quoting a 12-digit UAM number to a bank or a tender authority, you do not currently hold a live MSME registration. We will migrate you to Udyam — bring your old UAM number to the consultation call and we will take it from there.

SSI registration — including the Small Scale Industry certificate and the Provisional Registration Certificate — belongs to a regime that was superseded well before Udyog Aadhaar was itself replaced. It has no standing today. Udyam Registration is the only MSME registration the government currently recognises.

MSME is the legal category — Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise — under the MSME Development Act, 2006. "MSME registration" is the process by which the government formally recognises your business as one. That process was Udyog Aadhaar until 2020; today it is Udyam Registration, and the certificate you receive is the Udyam Registration Certificate.

The government portal charges nothing to register, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our professional fee, from ₹1,499, is for handling the filing: confirming your micro/small/medium category, choosing the right NIC activity codes, migrating any old UAM number, and making sure your Aadhaar, PAN and GST records match so the application is not rejected in verification. It is not a legal requirement to operate a business. But it is mandatory to claim any MSME benefit — collateral-free loans, subsidies, priority-sector lending, reserved government tenders and the 45-day payment protection under the MSMED Act are all closed to unregistered businesses. There is no penalty for not registering; you simply forgo everything it unlocks.

Most certificates are issued within 1–3 working days once Aadhaar OTP verification is complete and your PAN and turnover details validate against government records. The certificate is valid for life — there is no renewal and no expiry. You only update it if your investment, turnover or business details change materially.

Yes. The Udyam portal is built on Aadhaar OTP verification, so the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised director — with its linked mobile number — is essential. The PAN of the business is required as well.

No. The government issues the Udyam certificate digitally only. We deliver the soft copy to your dashboard; it carries a QR code and can be verified online, and banks and tender authorities accept it in that form.
