Overview

What is APEDA Registration?

APEDA — the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority — is a government body set up under the APEDA Act, 1985 and working under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is the export promotion body for India's agricultural and processed food exports, and it is the authority that registers exporters of the products listed in the Act's schedule.

If you export a scheduled product, registration with APEDA is mandatory. The schedule covers fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products, confectionery, biscuits and bakery products, honey, cereals, groundnuts, cocoa products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and a range of processed foods. Basmati rice is APEDA's flagship item. On approval, APEDA issues you a Registration-Cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC) — the same instrument other Export Promotion Councils issue for the products they cover. You need an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT before you can apply.

Registration is worth more than the compliance box it ticks. An APEDA RCMC gives you access to the authority's financial assistance schemes for infrastructure, packaging and quality improvement, its market development support, and its buyer-seller meets and international trade fairs. We, at LegalFidelity, confirm your product is scheduled, prepare the documents, file the application and hand you the certificate.

Why it matters

Benefits of APEDA Registration

Legally export scheduled products

Registration is compulsory for exporters of the products listed in the APEDA Act schedule — without it you cannot lawfully export them.

Financial assistance schemes

Registered exporters can apply for APEDA's assistance towards infrastructure, packaging development and quality improvement.

Market development support

APEDA funds and organises participation in international trade fairs, buyer-seller meets and export promotion campaigns.

Credibility with overseas buyers

An RCMC tells a foreign buyer that a government authority has registered you as a recognised exporter of that product.

Quality and packaging guidance

Access to APEDA's recognised testing laboratories, training programmes and product-specific quality standards.

One-time registration

APEDA registration does not lapse on a fixed cycle — you only go back to the authority when your business details change.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

It is registration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), a government body under the Ministry of Commerce. It is compulsory for exporters of the scheduled products APEDA covers, and results in a Registration-Cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC).

Yes, if you export a scheduled product. Exporters of fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy, cereals, processed foods and the other items in the APEDA Act schedule must register before they export, and registration is also what unlocks APEDA's assistance schemes.

APEDA's schedule covers fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products, confectionery, biscuits and bakery products, honey and jaggery, cocoa products, cereals — basmati rice is APEDA's flagship product — groundnuts and pulses, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and a range of processed foods. It does not cover everything you might export.

Then APEDA is not your authority. Each Export Promotion Council issues the RCMC for the products it covers — spices go to the Spices Board, marine products to MPEDA, tea and coffee to their respective Boards, engineering goods to EEPC, and so on. Tell us what you export and we will confirm which council you need; see our RCMC registration page for the general route.

Yes. An Import Export Code (IEC) issued by DGFT is a precondition — you cannot apply to APEDA without one. If you do not hold an IEC yet, our Premium plan includes obtaining it, or you can get it on its own from our IEC registration page.

Typically 7–10 working days from the date a complete application is submitted, provided your IEC and bank certificate are in order and APEDA raises no query.

Two separate amounts. Our professional fees start at ₹3,999, all-inclusive, and are quoted upfront on your free consultation. APEDA's own registration fee is payable to the authority and is charged separately at the rate then in force — our expert will confirm the current figure before you pay anything.

APEDA registration is a one-time registration and does not need routine renewal. You do have to go back to APEDA to amend the certificate if your business details change — name, constitution, address, directors or bank account.

Yes, and you may well need both. FSSAI regulates food safety for food businesses operating in India. APEDA registers exporters of scheduled agricultural and processed food products. One does not substitute for the other.

No. The application is filed online on the APEDA portal and the RCMC is issued digitally. You share your documents from your phone and we handle the filing and any follow-up.

APEDA RCMC (Registration Cum Membership Certificate)

After APEDA Registration, a certificate is issued which is called the RCMC or Registration Cum Membership Certificate.

This certificate is your valid proof of registration by APEDA. It certifies that your business is authorised to export the agricultural products under the Scheduled List of APEDA in India.

It allows you to enjoy export benefits and programs and provides credibility to international customers who usually prefer to transact with exporters having a valid RCMC .

Validity & Renewal of APEDA RCMC Certificate

Previously, the RCMC issued by APEDA had a duration of five years. However, under the new policy amendments, APEDA Registration and the RCMC are lifetime valid. Hence, you do not require renewal on a periodical basis.

However, exporters are required to notify and update APEDA in case of any change in important information like address of the company, directors, or bank account. It is necessary to keep your records up to date to ensure that your certificate remains valid and compliant as per law.

Time Taken for APEDA Registration

The APEDA Registration process normally takes around 7 to 10 working days to be approved.

Post Registration Compliance for APEDA Exporters

After registration the APEDA RCMC exporters require to fulfill some compliance requirements to continue enjoying government schemes:

  • Maintain Proper Export documentation: Goods invoices, bills of loading, quality certificates, and shipment records will need to be available to be viewed by APEDA or to claim subsidies.
  • File Report and keep updated: Export reports are supposed to be uploaded upon demand and APEDA compliance and DGFT compliance are to be adhered to in relation to avoidance of fines.
